What is Depression?

Depression is basically a mood disorder that involves a continuous feeling of mental illness, feeling sad, and loss of interest in everything. It is a different example of the mood swing that people regularly experience as a part of life.

Depression is mainly caused by the mishappening in lifelike death of  loved one, divorce, loss of a job, etc. But doctors only consider grief to be part of depression if they persist on a regular basis.

Depression is an ongoing problem, which persists for a long time. It consists of episodes during which the symptoms last for week, months.






Signs & Symptoms:

Major depression consists of various types of symptoms and signs. Some affect your mood and some affect your body. The symptoms & sign of depression changes from person to person and also depends on the situations. Sometimes they appear and sometimes didn’t appear.

Some common symptoms of depression include:
  • Thoughts of death or suicide.
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions.
  • Feeling worthless or guilty.
  • Increased fatigue & Loss of energy.
  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood.
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in favorite activities.
  • A loss of sexual desire.
  • Sleeping too much or too little.
  • Slowed movement and speech.
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt.
  • Recursive thoughts of death or suicide.
  • Unintentional weight loss or gain

Cause

The doctor community does not fully understand the cause of depression. There is the various cause, which triggers depression after combining all of them together and others depend on the circumstances. Some common cause includes:
  1. Family history.
  2. Early childhood trauma.
  3. Brain Structure.
  4. Medical Condition.
  5. Drugs use.
  6. Psychological and social factors.
  7. Environmental factors.
  8. Genetic features.
  9. Changes in the brain’s neurotransmitter levels because of some medical condition or health conditions.

Types of depression

Their are various type of depression. Below are some of the most common types.

  • Bipolar disorder.
  • Psychotic depression.
  • Postpartum depression.
  • Major depressive disorder with a seasonal pattern.

Major Depression:


In Major Depression person generally lose interest in the activities, which he/she enjoyed playing. But because of the major depression, problem brain pattern will get change and life become depressed. This generally includes mental disorder and feeling depressed. Treatment generally involves medication & psychotherapy.

Persistent depressive disorder:



Also known as dysthymia, the persistent depressive disorder causes symptoms that last for at least 2 years. During this duration, a person may get the episode of major depression, which can cause severe illness.

Bipolar Disorder:


Bipolar is one of the symptoms of the Depression. A person with bipolar disorder leads to having more complicated situation and research show that people with this disorder may have symptoms around half of the time. Because of which it will become difficult to distinguish from depression.

Psychotic depression:


Some peoples feel psychosis with depression. Which leads them to believe in delusion & false reality. People suffer from psychotic depression also feel detached from reality. 
It can also involve the hallucinations - sensing things that do not exist. But as lots of symptoms are their with psychotic depression it doesn’t mean that. there is no treatment option that exists for this.

Postpartum depression:

These symptoms of depression appear to the mother, after the birth of a baby. To which the people call them “baby blue”.When hormons level readjusts after childbirth, change in mood can result.

Doctor’s of mental illness usually ask the complete the questionaries to help assess the severity of their depression.

  1. The Hamilton depression rating, In this victim, have 21 Question. Whose score determines the severity of depression.
  2. The beck depression inventory, Another set of questions that help the mental professional to find out the Risk factors of depression.

Treatment:
  1. Medication.
  2. Anti-depression.
  3. Anti-Anxiety.
  4. Antipsychotic medication.

Therapy Treatment:

  1. Psycho Therapy.
  2. Light Therapy.
  3. Alternative Therapy.
  4. Exercise.
  5. Avoid Alcohol & Drugs.

Psycho Therapy:

Speaking with the therapist may also help you to cope with the negative feeling. This can be more beneficial to discuss with a group of family members known as group therapy.

Light Therapy:

Exposure to white light is used to cure depression and mood regulation. Light therapy is commonly used in seasonal affective disorder, which is now called a major depressive disorder.

Alternative Therapy:

Alternative therapies are aqua-puncture and meditation. Some herbal supplements are also used to cure depression.

Exercise:

Aim for exercise 4 to 5 days a week. Exercise will increase your body production of endorphins, which will help to improve your cure for your depression symptoms.

Avoid Alcohol & Drugs:

Drinking and intake of drugs may feel you better. But in the long run, these substances can make depression and anxiety symptoms more worse.

Risk Factor:

Some people have a higher risk of depression than others:
  1. Experiencing life problems such as work issues, changes in life problems, relationships, and medical concerns.
  2. Experience acute stress.
  3. A close relationship with depression.
  4. Using some prescribed drugs.
  5. Having sustained a head injury.
  6. Having a previous episode of major depression.
  7. Living with persistent pain.
